Why is the central hub gateway necessary for local mode?

Instead of polling, xiaomi_home depends on publish/subscribe mechanism to update the device latest property values. xiaomi_home subscribes the device property updating messages from a broker so that the broker pushes the message to xiaomi_home when the device reports its property value changes. The broker can be a cloud broker running in MIoT cloud service or a local broker which is the central hub gateway.

Why do some IoT devices not work well in local mode even though xiaomi_home is connected to the central hub gateway?

When xiaomi_home works with a local broker, it also requires that the IoT device is able to report its properties_changed messages to the broker. Many old devices do not have the ability to report property updating messages to the local broker. They only have the ability to report updating messages to the cloud broker. The WiFi devices released before 2021 most likely can only report messages to the cloud broker.

If xiaomi_home is connected to the central hub gateway but the internet is not accessible, xiaomi_home cannot receive any messages from the device which is not able to report messages to the local broker.
